In recent years, podcasts have seen a tremendous growth. New formats and artists have been added continuously, now offering a rich and a colorful mix of entertainment and infotainment shows.
One platform that was significantly driving this development is Spotify. Besides their streaming service, the Swedish company offers artists and fans many formats to connect, create and celebrate new content. For this year's podcast summit All Ears at Wilhelm Halls in Berlin, Spotify invited important players in Europe's podcast scene to share and discuss what is out and about.
rlon has been asked to enrich the event with some physical storytelling.
Together with openers realized three installations.
For our first installation we decided to take All Ears literally, and created a giant mosaic made of custom silicon ears. 768 ears of four different colors mimic one of the branding elements for this event.
Thanks to the spacious location, visitors were able to view the piece up close and from a distance. Walking towards the mosaic resembled the effect of zooming in to a small pixel image.
To make the idea of All Ears even more tangible, all ears were just plugged in and visitors were invited to take one with them.
For our second installation we have been chewing on the question how to manifest podcasting as a sculpture. Few sketches and spirals later, two main components emerged: the microphone and the cloud.
We teamed up with Zissou Balloons to create a colorful cloud that is hovering above the podcast crowd and releasing some microphones. It is raining mics and heaven is asking for your voice.
As for all serious clouds, the lights of the inflatable cloud were controllable via DMX – popping some nice effects during the after party.
Thanks to the sponsor Shure, for making this microphone abundance possible.
As for the third installation, we planted a tree, a tree of light. For the party after the summit, we joined forces with ELIAS and crafted a tree-like structure that was stretching its branches into the room. The fruits of this plant were 77 crystals glowing in the full spectrum of R, G and B.
Things became dazzling when we connected the tree to the overall light control of the event. Apart from the music, the DJ now was emitting waves of light pumping through the tree. A dance floor to get lost.
